This week we had a fantastic field trip to see The Georgia Ballet perform The Nutcracker. The students looked their best and behaved fantastically. They really enjoyed the show and were amazed at how the ballerinas could stand on their toes.

We have started a new math unit on shapes. Students are responsible for describing shapes according to their attributes-like sides and angles.

Energy

Last week we learned all about heat. Not a moment too soon. Boy, has is it cold outside! In the Science Lab the students saw how heat changes matter by making pancakes. They were also able to see how plants use heat to make food and store energy. They dug up the sweet potatoes they planted last year.  In class we learned how to Close Read and make Think Marks. Please see the pictures below.

We will continue to practice Close Reading and study energy next week. If you are able, please join our class for Thanksgiving lunch on Thursday at 11:00.

Thank you

Thank you so much for a wonderful conference week. The students did such a great job sharing their leadership notebooks with you. I am so proud of them and I know you are too. They have made so much progress already! I can't wait to see what the next 9 weeks brings.

In math we have been estimating and measuring using centimeters. The students had a great time measuring pumpkins . We are using our estimates and  actual measurements to learn a new strategy. The strategy is called adding up in chunks. It is a subtraction strategy. It's very different than the way you and I learned to subtract. Have your child show you! (I added a picture of a sample below in case you need some help;))

Slime and Georgia Regions

This week we had a messy visit to the Science Lab! The students got to make Goop and Silly Puddy. The students got to explore what happens when we mix different solids and liquids. If you would like to make Silly Puddy at home you will need 2 tbs or white glue, 2 tbs of liquid starch, and food coloring. First mix the glue and food coloring, then add the liquid starch, stir and watch the liquids come together. Play with the Puddy so it becomes more solid than liquid. Store in the refrigerator to prevent mold.

So far we have learned about 3 of Georgia's 5 regions. They are  Coastal Plain, Appalachian Plateau,  and the Piedmont. As you have the week off or are traveling for fall break, it would be a great time to explore Georgia's regions with your child! When we get back we finish the regions and move onto Georgia's rivers.

Word Work, Properties of Matter, and Proper Nouns

What a busy week!

In the Science Lab we had some great matter stations. The students explored the properties of solids, liquids, and gases. Back in class we took a closer look at liquids. We had a variety of liquids for them to observe and touch. Including hand sanitizer, glue, oil, and maple syrup. The students choose one of the liquids to describe.

Second graders are responsible for capitalizing holidays, geographical locations, and products. This week we focused on products. They named specific cereals, sodas ,candy, and crackers. The groups worked together to come up with specific products for each category and reminded each other to capitalize.

In class students have the opportunity to practice their spelling words. We call these centers Word Work. They are part of our Daily 3.
